Common Questions
Answers about Dutch financial rules, our calculators, and how to use them.
Are all these calculators free?
Yes — all 6 calculators are completely free. No account, email, or payment is ever required. Every tool runs entirely in your browser and does not store or transmit your personal data.
How does the 30% ruling work in the Netherlands?
The 30% ruling allows eligible expat employees to receive up to 30% of their gross salary tax‑free for a maximum of 5 years (reduced from 8 years in recent reforms). You must be recruited from abroad, meet specific salary thresholds, and have lived more than 150 km from the Dutch border before your assignment. Use our 30% Ruling Calculator to check your eligibility and estimate your savings.
What are the income tax rates in the Netherlands for 2025?
Box 1 income (employment, pension, self‑employment) is taxed at 36.97% on income up to €75,518 and 49.50% on income above that threshold. Tax credits — including the algemene heffingskorting (general tax credit, max €3,070) and arbeidskorting (employment credit, max €5,599) — substantially reduce your effective tax rate. Our Salary and Take‑Home Pay calculators apply all credits automatically.
How much mortgage can I get in the Netherlands?
Dutch mortgage rules allow borrowing up to 100% of the property value (LTV). Your maximum borrowing capacity is based on your gross annual income, with the loan‑to‑income ratio set annually by the government. NHG (Nationale Hypotheek Garantie) covers loans up to €435,000 (2025) with lower interest rates. Our Mortgage Calculator factors in all these rules to show your maximum borrowing capacity and monthly repayments.
What taxes do self‑employed people pay in the Netherlands?
As a ZZP’er (self‑employed without staff), you pay Box 1 income tax on your profits after deductions. Key deductions include the zelfstandigenaftrek (self‑employed deduction), startersaftrek (starter deduction for new entrepreneurs), and the MKB‑winstvrijstelling (SME profit exemption, 13.31%). You also charge BTW (VAT) at 21% or 9% on your invoices and file quarterly VAT returns. Our Self‑Employed Calculator estimates your net income after all deductions and taxes.
Which cities are covered by the Cost of Living Calculator?
Our Netherlands Cost of Living Calculator covers Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, Eindhoven, Groningen, and other major Dutch cities. It compares housing (rent), groceries, transport, mandatory health insurance (zorgverzekering), utilities, and dining expenses side‑by‑side to help you plan your budget or relocation.
Are these calculators compliant with 2025 Dutch regulations?
Yes. All calculators are built using the latest 2025 Belastingdienst tax bands, loonheffing rates, social security contributions, NHG mortgage limits, and 30% ruling conditions. We update them whenever official rates change to ensure accuracy for your financial planning.
